The waiting time allows the infatuation to cool down. By this time clear and sanitized decisions can be made and one can decide if they are still interested in the person they met 8 months ago for instance. I personally recommend 8 months because it is more than half a year, less than a year and enough time to meet more people. By this time there should be enough general information about the crush and the possibility of actually moving into a relationship with them.

The same concept applies to online dating; it is good to wait at least 4 months before meeting in person, then counting another 8 months from the time you meet before considering to date. It is a good idea to meet in a busy place with lots of people when meeting for the first time in person. Also going with at least one other person as company helps with morale support and security.
