Oxford House Expansion Project

Proposal to Crowdfund an Oxford House in Accra

As the chairperson of the Oxford House Chapter in Ghana and the owner of the sole proprietorship Koware, Mr. ENKAB Yamoah is spearheading the establishment of a new Oxford House in Accra. This proposal outlines the plan to acquire and operate the Oxford House through a crowdfunding campaign.

The Oxford House Model

Oxford Houses are independent, supportive, and sober living environments that follow a community-based approach to addiction recovery. Each house is democratically run by the residents, who must adhere to three core rules:

  1. No use of drugs or alcohol and no disruption
  2. The house must be run democratically
  3. Residents must pay the Equal Expense Shared (EES) cost, typically between 80-160 GHS per week

Oxford Houses have been shown to be effective in empowering residents and enhancing their perception of control over their recovery. Research has found that over 69% of residents either stayed in the house or left on good terms over a two-year period.

The Accra Oxford House Project

Mr. ENKAB, a GIMPA graduate with a Bachelor’s degree in Project Management, has teamed up with 4 other Oxford House alumni to establish a new Oxford House in Accra. They plan to work closely with the Hopefulway Foundation, which has experience in setting up Oxford Houses, to ensure the success of this project. The key elements of the project are:

  1. Acquire a 5-bedroom house at an estimated cost of 575,000 GHS
  2. Renovate and furnish the house, with an initial 3-month operating budget
  3. Recruit and onboard 6-10 residents from local rehab centers within the first 4 months
  4. Operate and manage the Oxford House with support from the Hopefulway Foundation

Crowdfunding Campaign

To fund the acquisition and setup of the Oxford House, Koware has launched a crowdfunding campaign on its website (https://koware.org). Potential contributors, including the Hopefulway Foundation and Mr. ENKAB’s close family and friends, can invest in the project and expect a return on their investment. The return on investment will be calculated as a percentage of the contributor’s contribution against the excess received from rent after expenses. This will provide an opportunity for contributors to support a meaningful cause while also potentially earning a return on their investment.

Budget

The estimated budget for the project is as follows:

ItemCost (GHS)
House Acquisition575,000
Renovation and Furnishing150,000
Initial 3-Month Operating Expenses120,000
